Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) instant yeast

3/4 cup warm water (110°F)

1 tablespoon sugar

1 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons olive oil (plus extra for brushing)

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Grated Parmesan cheese (for topping)

Fresh parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and instant yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, garlic powder, oregano, and red pepper flakes.

Combine: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the yeast mixture, mixing with a wooden spoon until a dough starts to form.

Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

First Rise: Lightly oil a bowl and place the dough inside, turning it once to coat it with oil. Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Shape the Breadsticks: After the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope about 12 inches long.

Form Hearts: Take each rope and bend it into a heart shape. Twist the ends together for more variety in shapes.

Second Rise: Place the shaped breadsticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover with a towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

Preheat the Oven: While the breadsticks are rising, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Bake: Brush the tops of the breadsticks with olive oil and sprinkle lightly with grated Parmesan cheese. Bake for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown.

Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley for a touch of color. Enjoy warm with marinara sauce or your favorite dipping sauce!
