Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

1 lb ground beef

1/2 lb ground pork

1/2 cup breadcrumbs

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped

1 large egg

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried basil

Salt and pepper to taste

For the Sauce:

2 cups marinara sauce

1 tsp red pepper flakes (optional for heat)

For the Subs:

4 hoagie rolls

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Meatballs: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, parsley, egg, garlic, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.

Form the Meatballs: Roll the mixture into 12 equal-sized meatballs, about 1.5 inches in diameter.

Cook the Meatballs: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the meatballs on a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes or until fully cooked through (internal temperature should reach 160°F or 70°C).

Heat the Sauce: While the meatballs are baking, pour the marinara sauce into a saucepan and heat over medium heat. Add red pepper flakes if desired, and let simmer.

Prepare the Subs: Once the meatballs are done, add them to the simmering sauce, gently tossing to coat.

Assemble the Subs: Cut the hoagie rolls lengthwise, making sure not to cut all the way through. Place 3 meatballs along the inside of each roll. Spoon additional sauce over the meatballs, then sprinkle shredded mozzarella on top.

Melt the Cheese: Preheat your broiler. Place the assembled subs on a baking sheet and broil for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven, add fresh basil leaves for garnish, and serve hot with extra marinara sauce on the side.
