Ingredients

1 loaf of challah or brioche bread, sliced thick (about 1-inch thick)

4 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon orange zest (optional)

1/2 cup brown sugar, for topping

Fresh berries (for garnish, optional)

Maple syrup (for serving)

Instructions

Prepare the Custard Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, salt, and orange zest (if using) until smooth and well combined.

Layer the Bread: In a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, arrange the slices of challah or brioche in a single layer. You can slightly overlap the pieces if needed.

Soak the Bread: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the sliced bread, ensuring all pieces are well-coated. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight (or at least for 4 hours) to allow the bread to soak up the custard.

Preheat the Oven: On the day of serving, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Bake the French Toast: Remove the plastic wrap from the baking dish and sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the top of the soaked bread. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the French toast is puffed and golden, and a custard knife or toothpick comes out clean.

Brûlée the Top: For a crispy top, switch the oven to broil mode. Broil for 2-3 minutes, keeping a close eye to avoid burning, until the sugar caramelizes and forms a crisp crust.

Serve: Allow the French toast to cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm with a drizzle of maple syrup and a handful of fresh berries, if desired.
